Ngorongoro Crater

A paradise for wildlife watchers

Ngorongoro Crater is considered one of the best places in the world for wildlife viewing. More than 25,000 animals live on its floor, including the rare black rhino, which found refuge from extinction here. Visitors can also spot large predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas, as well as herds of elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles and many other species. Lakes in the crater, such as Lake Magadi, attract thousands of flamingos and other waterfowl, making it a birdwatcher's paradise.

Natural Wonder of Africa, UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most important and beautiful nature reserves in the world, located in northern Tanzania, on the edge of the famous Great Rift Valley. It is part of a larger area known as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers an area of almost 8,300 square kilometres and includes a variety of ecosystems, from montane forests to vast savannahs.

The crater, which is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, was formed approximately two to three million years ago when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself, creating this monumental natural formation. The crater is around 20 kilometres in diameter and approximately 600 metres deep. Inside this natural amphitheatre is a rich ecosystem that is home to some of Africa's most famous species of fauna.

In 1979, Ngorongoro was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, confirming its exceptional importance in terms of both natural and cultural values. This status helps to protect and preserve this unique ecosystem for future generations.
